The founders had raised concerns over Sikka's steep compensation hike and expensive severance packages of former executives Rajiv Bansal (CFO) and David Kennedy (General Counsel). "It is very, very tough. Everybody says it is tough, but when you do it in reality, when you exercise it, you realise that it is much more difficult than it seems," said Sikka when asked about transforming the culture of an organisation to become innovative. He was speaking at a discussion conducted by Wharton School. Acknowledging the role played by co-founder N R Narayana Murthy, Sikka said having a culture of learning always helps. "We had that it comes from our foun

Modi govt targets 25 billion digital transactions in next financial year

As the govt grapples with issues to take cashless payments to the masses, some are concerned about security and privacy issues. The government’s plan to reach 25 billion digital transactions in the next financial year will be driven by consumption-based payments, said experts, who expect digital education of both consumers and merchants along with security steps and enabling regulations to support the process. While demonetisation was a great push towards increased digital transactions, challenges to keep the momentum going remain as 90% of the Indian economy still uses cash, representatives of financial technology companies, wallet providers, banks and payment platforms said at a panel discussion on building a cashless future at the Global Business Summit on Tuesday. “We need relevant solutions for different demographic as the masses may have different needs, then there’s low awareness levels, and economics … we feel every small merchant should be able to accept any kind of pa

Google wants Indians hooked to broadband with 10GB a month usage

NEW DELHI: Internet giant Google's mission is to get a billion Indians hooked to broadband, and make each use 10GB a month in the next 4-to-5 years, says Gulzar Azad, Country Head (Connectivity) at Google India. In an interaction with ET's Danish Khan, Azad, however, says contributions would need to come from across the internet space, telcos, content players and the government to realise this goal. Edited excerpts. What's Google's ultimate goal in India from a connectivity perspective ? We would want a billion people online, and want them on broadband. And, that's really where India's full potential would be fulfilled. It's clear that `digital' is an economic growth force and that's something India not only needs to move towards, but also track over a period of time in terms of achieving it in a given time-scale. Google's ultimate goal is a billion broadband users, each using 10GB a month. And to do that, contributions have to come from th

5 qualities that startups look for when hiring

Startups may be down for now but not out .The festive season has kicked in a temporary hiring spree in the startups particularly catering to ecommerce segment. This has kicked in some positive sentiments in the startup segment which has been written off for some time now.   According to Harvard’s Shikhar Ghosh, senior lecturer in the Entrepreneurial Management Unit, 75 per cent startups fail. This figure could be alarming for those looking for a job in the startup domain. Although Indian startup ecosystem is one of the most prospering one, the industry is undergoing a correction phase right now. However, jobs are still aplenty in this industry.  Hiring right candidate for business is top on the agenda of the startups. Since the model of a startup business is unconventional, startups generally don’t like to hire conventional people. Hence, hiring for a startup is much different from hiring for an established venture. And you cannot expect a good placement in a startup unless y

Most bike taxi services have shut operations in India

While only a few states provide for commercial bike-taxi licenses, the lack of clarity on regulations is not the only reason for these failures. Bike taxis are popular in Indonesia and Thailand, where they weave through traffic jams to get people around in a fraction of the time a cab takes. But in India, bike taxis are finding it tough. Most of the players in major markets like Bengaluru and Gurugram, that started over the past few years, have shut down. While only a few states provide for commercial bike-taxi licenses, the lack of clarity on regulations is not the only reason for these failures. The poorly funded local players have not been able to match the heavy subsidies to customers and drivers by players like Uber and Ola, which makes them unattractive to both segments. Also, the market itself does not appear to be growing rapidly , probably the reason why Uber and Ola too do not seem to be taking the segment seriously . Haryana provides a commercial bike taxi lice

Streaming services arent the future of music - theyre the new normal

couple of noteworthy things have happened in the music streaming world this week. First, streaming giant Spotify came to a new licensing agreement with record label giant Universal. Spotify will notably limit some albums to its paid tier for two weeks at a time, but singles will still have no restrictions, and Universal will reportedly charge less in royalty fees as part of the arrangement. Second, Kanye West's "The Life of Pablo" became the first album to go platinum in the US through streams. It's been streamed more than 3 billion times since its release in February 2016. Spotify and Kanye are two titans in their fields, but the news points to a trend: Streaming is the new normal for how Americans listen to music. If the codependent nature of Spotify and Universal's agreement isn't enough, this chart from Statista should make it clearer: According to the RIAA , streaming brought in more than half of the US music industry's revenue in 2016. Uber says a big New York Times story was wrong about drivers losing work as pickup times get better

Uber Uber is refuting a major assertion in a recent New York Times story about how the company manages its drivers. The story mostly focused on how Uber uses social engineering techniques to encourage drivers to stay on the road longer. But it also asserts that the more drivers there are on the road, the more time these drivers spend idling and not making money because there's not enough demand. In a blog post written by Uber's director of policy research Betsy Masiello published Wednesday, Uber says these claims are false and that more drivers on the road actually results in more work for them. Without getting too technical, Masiello says Uber has data that shows as Uber gets better at reducing wait times in a city and improving the overall experience, it attracts more riders to the service. Therefore, there are more fares for drivers in a " virtuous cycle" that benefits everyone. "First, as the number of passengers and drivers using Uber grows,

Googles parent company, Alphabet, is a massive company dabbling in a bunch of surprising areas

It's been more than a year since Google blew up its entire corporate structure to form a new parent company: Alphabet. The shake-up was intended to help all of its businesses operate more efficiently, a move CEO Larry Page was working on for years as a secret project he called "Javelin." This move also allowed Page to step back from day-to-day operations to "focus on the bigger picture." Now, Alphabet is a massive corporation - ranking in size behind Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft - that encompasses everything from internet-beaming hot air balloons to self-driving cars to Google Cloud. Here's how all of Alphabet's companies fit under the umbrella. Get the latest Google stock price

A Next Generation Data Center

A Next Generation Data Center is a storage environment that uses software to virtualize, optimize and simplify data management.  In taking advantage of these tools an agency becomes more agile and its IT tools and enterprise applications are more powerful.  It doesn’t matter what type of storage is being used – cloud-based, spinning disk or an all flash array – the software creates the basis for a Data Fabric making it simple to move data across different environments and put it to work in support of mission-critical activities. The best news for data center managers is that you don’t need any more physical space or real estate to build a NGDC.  In fact, because Next Generation Data Centers are virtualized environments, leveraging the cloud and flash storage, they can help agencies consolidate their data centers’ physical footprint and drive agile operations and efficient acquisition processes. Key Discussion Points How are data centers evolving? How is the next generation of stora

H-1B employers face stricter rules

The federal government is doing something it has never done before: It's encouraging people to file H-1B abuse complaints. This week the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Labor each posted information about how to file a complaint against suspected H-1B abuse. It's a clear signal that government scrutiny of H-1B use will intensify and that the U.S. may challenge employers. But it creates a dilemma aptly summed up by Norm Matloff, a professor of computer science at the University of California at Davis, in a blog post titled, "American Victims of H-1B Get Their Chance -- Will They Take It?" There's good reason to believe that they won't. Many workers have been reluctant to file complaints. This includes H-1B visa holders who have been hurt by the system, but especially U.S. workers who have been displaced by it. This problem was illustrated by the Southern California Edison (SCE) layoffs in 2015. The Labor and Justice departments we
