Google Areo is a new app for ordering food or home services in India

Google is getting into the restaurant delivery and home services businesses – nope, not in the U.S., but rather in parts of India. The company has quietly launched a new app called Areo which currently only works in Bangalore and Mumbai, India, allowing users to order meals from nearby restaurants or schedule appointments with local service professionals, including electricians, painters, cleaners, plumbers, and more. The app was first spotted by The Android Soul blog, then confirmed with Google by The Economic Times. Areo popped up on the Google Play Store on April 12, 2017, where the company briefly explains how the product works. The idea is to consolidate both food delivery and home services in a single app, where you can search for dishes or restaurants – even filter by vegetarian options – or book appointment times with local pros. Users can also pay in the app, the description indicates, via card, netbanking, or cash on delivery. With Areo, Google is basically acting as

Amazon gets licence to launch digital wallet

After homegrown e-tailers Flipkart and Snapdeal, the Indian arm of the world’s biggest e-commerce company Amazon.com, Inc. will have its own digital wallet. The company has secured a licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate a prepaid payment instrument (PPI), becoming the latest entrant into the country’s booming financial technology space. According to the RBI website, Amazon Online Distribution Services Pvt. Ltd secured the licence late last month. “RBI is in the process of finalising the guidelines for PPIs. We look forward to seeing a continuation of low-limit wallet dispensation with simplified KYC and authentication. This will allow us to help customers adopt digital payments at scale,” Sriram Jagannathan, vice president, payments, Amazon India, said in response to a query from VCCircle. A former Citibank executive, Jagannathan joined Amazon India in February 2016 to head its payments business. In December, the company had launched Amazon Pay Balance, a p

Airtel hits back at Reliance Jio with 14GB for Rs 145 offer

Airtel's chief Sunil Bharti Mittal recently acknowledged the tough competition in the telecom sector induced by Reliance Jio. He went on to say that Airtel will challenge every Jio offer with a similar Airtel offer. The company was quick to follow up its promises. Airtel launched a new data scheme which challenges Jio's low rates per GB and that too, with an option of smaller packages. Jio's Rs 303 offer, so far, was uncontested by any other telecom operator in the country. However, Airtel's new offer does take on competition, rather aggressively. The new Rs 145 data pack can get you a good 14GB of data for nearly half a month. This sets a direct comparison between this offer and Jio's 1GB per day offer. For Rs 345 an Airtel user will get 1GB data which can be extended to 4GB (1GB regular pack benefit and 3GB free data). Apart from that, the pack offers free calls to any network in the country. With the Rs 145 pack you'll get free local plus STD Airtel

Turing's latest phone comes with a digital assistant called Sir Alan

F or a company that calls itself a phone maker, Turing Robotics Industries (TRI) doesn’t have a great reputation when it comes to actually shipping phones. The firm’s first handset, the “ultra-secure” Turing Phone, was repeatedly delayed, and when it did finally reach consumers, came with a different operating system to the one originally advertised (Sailfish instead of Android). That’s perhaps why TRI announced today  that it’s partnering with Chinese tech company TCL to make the Turing Phone Appassionato. TCL is one of the world’s largest phone makers, selling devices under a number of brands  including Alcatel and BlackBerry. According to TRI CEO Syl Chao, this expertise — along with “invaluable feedback” gathered from owners of the first Turing Phone — will help TRI improve its mobile offerings in 2017 As with previous devices announced by TRI, the Appassionato (which was “soft-launched”  earlier this year) sounds gratuitously high end. According to TRI’s spe

Google Photos can now stabilize all your shaky phone camera video

G oogle Photos is where all my photos are. Long ago I was a man of SmugMug, and then Flickr, and then at some point spent days and days copying years of images to iCloud Photo Library before eventually disregarding that and switching to Google. What can I say? I’m a simple person who can be easily delighted and swayed by automatic GIF creation and reliable backups. And Google Photos keeps getting better. Here’s the latest example: now the mobile app can automatically stabilize videos in your camera roll with a tap. A lot of flagship smartphones offer optical image stabilization when shooting video, a hardware feature that helps keep footage smooth. Others, like Google’s Pixel, use software to try and stabilize jerky movements. Putting stabilization inside the Google Photos app could enhance results further if you’re already working with hardware OIS, or improve recordings significantly if your phone lacks any means of steadying things out of the box. The stabilized video is croppe
