IBM unveils Brain-Like chip : TrueNorth chip
IBM’s chip simulates brain-like functions of neurons, synapses and much
more. Each chip contains 1 million neurons and 256 millions synapses.
The chip is capable of making super complex calculations like a super-computer and
also shows off decision making and learning abilities of a human brain.
It is a product of neuromorphic engineering which is a way to imitate
the working of biological brain.
The chip is a result of 10 years of research, $3 billion investment
and 200 people’s efforts. It works on just 70mW energy, equivalent to a
hearing aid.

“It’s a supercomputer the size of postage stamp, the weight of a
feather and runs on the power of a hearing-aid, It’s a genuinely radical
innovation.” said Dharmendra Modha, chief scientist for intelligence
computing at IBM Research.
“Designing this chip was no cakewalk, many thought it was impossible.
The impossible has now become possible. We hope the possible will
someday become real.” said Modha.
